Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez, R-Lake Elsinore, announced Monday evening she intends to run for the state Senate seat being vacated by State Sen. Jeff Stone. Stone resigned last week to take a position as regional director in the U.S. Labor Department.

Melendez announced her candidacy for the 28th District Senate seat in a Facebook Live broadcast, where she blasted Democratic politicians — who enjoy super-majorities in both the State Senate and Assembly and hold every statewide elected position — for not adequately addressing issues like homelessness, drugs and wealth inequality.

“This state has been run by Democrats for years and now where do we find ourselves?” she said. “The last thing we need is to send another member of the majority party to fill this seat.”
